Forest Inventory and
Vegetation assessments
Forest inventories and growth analysis for forestry management planning, along with vegetation surveys for ecological assessments.
Data science, Field Logistics & Data Collection
Expertise in statistical analysis, process automation, scientific programming, database management, field work logistics, environmental data collection and assessment.
Ecology and
Restoration
Ecologist specializing in forest, aquatic, and alpine/arctic systems, with a focus on landscape ecology, environmental monitoring, restoration, and natural resource management.
River and Estuarine Health and Watershed management
Skilled in the management, water quality monitoring, and environmental assessment of estuaries and rivers to support biological ecosystem functioning in natural and highly managed waterways.
Featured past projects
Satellite remote sensing and in-situ continuous monitoring of primary production in the Sea Scheldt Estuary, Belgium
I conducted a comprehensive assessment of primary production drivers in the Sea Scheldt Estuary, the key waterway serving the Ports of Antwerp and Ghent, by integrating satellite remote sensing of chlorophyll and turbidity with in-situ continuous monitoring of biological parameters. This research was carried out in collaboration with Flemish Waterways, Flanders Hydraulics, Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences, VITO, FWO, and the University of Antwerp, contributing to a deeper understanding of estuarine ecosystem dynamics and water quality management.
Assessing ecological functioning of restored urban rivers in Oslo, Norway
I conducted an assessment of restoration success in previously culverted urban streams in Oslo, including Hovinbekken among others, comparing their ecological function to that of natural streams. My research focused on evaluating their capacity to mitigate wastewater contamination by breaking down leaked sewage before it reached the Oslo Fjord. This project was carried out in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), contributing to the understanding of urban stream restoration and water quality management. Timber stand mapping and forest inventory of municipal forests around Thun, Switzerland
I conducted the stand mapping, forest inventory, and analysis for the 10-year forest management plan for the municipal forests surrounding the city of Thun, Switzerland. This project was undertaken in collaboration with Forstbetrieb Sigriswil, supporting sustainable forest management and resource planning.
About me
Pali F. Gelsomini
I am a researcher and consultant with a multidisciplinary background in forestry, ecology, and environmental management. My academic and professional journey has equipped me with expertise in GIS, environmental monitoring, and natural resource management, allowing me to develop data-driven solutions for sustainable landscape and ecosystem management.
I began my studies in Upstate New York, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry with a minor in GIS from Paul Smith’s College, where I focused on low-impact, surgical logging techniques. Following this, I interned in Switzerland as a forest engineer, specializing in forest inventories, ecological restoration, and sustainable forest management.
To further advance my expertise, I pursued a Master’s degree in Ecology in Norway from NMBU, with a focus on ecological restoration and waterway management. My master’s thesis examined stream de-culverting and restoration in Oslo, contributing to the understanding of urban waterway rehabilitation.
Building on this foundation, I’m pursuing a PhD in Biology at the University of Antwerp Belgium, where my research integrates in-situ and satellite remote sensing data to assess water quality in the Sea Scheldt estuary, a critical waterway serving the Ports of Antwerp and Ghent.
With experience spanning academic research, applied environmental science, and consultancy, I operate at the intersection of science, industry, and conservation, working to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for forests, waterways, and ecosystems.
Portfolios
With a background in forestry, waterway management, and ecological restoration, I use GIS, research, and field expertise to inform sustainable solutions and landscape management.
